Leisure time

The range of leisure activities in and around Wuppertal is just as gigantic as the wealth of tips on where, when and what is going on.

The Luisenstraße is a good place to eat and drink. The cultural programme is varied and can be looked up at wuppertal-live.de or in the newspapers Coolibri, Italien and Heinz. There are numerous clubs and societies in which you can get involved.

There are very compact collections of addresses here. Special features of the region can be found at Bergischen Städtedreieck. Dates and tickets are just as important as information from Wuppertaler Stadtwerke.

Mobility

The student ID card is also the semester ticket, which entitles everyone to use all means of transport - i.e. bus, tram, suspension railway and local trains within NRW - free of charge. At weekends and on public holidays as well as after 7 pm, a second person can travel free of charge. The semester ticket/student ID card also entitles you to many additional benefits, such as free or reduced admission to many cinemas, clubs + parties or cultural events.

For students who frequently travel long distances on Deutsche Bahn, a Bahncard 25 or 50 may be worthwhile.

Another alternative are car-sharing agencies such as Drive2day, MFZ or Mitfahrt. Taxi journeys are relatively expensive in Germany.

Or your own car? Anyone who buys a motor vehicle in Germany and wants to drive it here must register it with the road traffic office. This is only possible if the vehicle has third-party liability insurance. Which international driving licence is valid in Germany and for how long must be checked on a case-by-case basis.

Sports

Fancy university sports? For a small contribution towards costs (around 15 euros per semester), you can take part in aerobics, ai ki do, aquarobics autogenic training, bodyfit, capoeira, fencing, fitness boxing, flamenco, football, gymnastics, hockey, inline hockey, inline skating, karate, juggling, climbing, horse riding and tai chi.

Going out

The best place is always at the bar - but which one? In the university pub 'Kneipe' on campus, for example. But there's always something going on in other Wuppertal pubs, cinemas and discos too. Extended clubbing is also possible.
